“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18).
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38).
There are millions of people around the world who are trapped in the grip of demonic oppression, but they are completely unaware of that fact! They are wounded, and believe that they are helpless. As a consequence they find themselves unable to move forward in life. Individuals who are demonically oppressed often cannot succeed in the very areas of life that are most important to them.
Demonic oppression is not limited to the unsaved, but also affects a countless number of born again Christians. Let’s begin by a discussion of the meaning of the word oppression. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines oppression as “a sense of being weighed down in body or mind.” Demon oppression is often the result of generation or blood-line curses. The definition of a curse is, a compense (repayment) or effect of a sin.
Demonic oppression can result from generational curses which “represents the accumulation of all sins committed by ancestors. It is the heart’s tendency (iniquity) that we inherit from our forefathers to rebel (I.e. disobedience, unfaithfulness, lust, gambling) against God’s laws and commandments. It is the prospensity (inclination) to sin in a particular way that represents perversion and a twisted character. The accumulation continues until God’s conditions for repentance have been met. Generational curses and demonic oppression hold an individual back from their godly destiny by hurts, curses and bondages.
Demonic opression, unlike demonic possession, does not affect the person’s total being, but affects only a certain area of a person’s life, such as drugs, unforgiveness, hatred, sexual immorality, depression, etc. Demonic oppression can result from what the Bible calls, “sins of the fathers.” When the scriptures use “fathers,” as in Exodus 20:5, the meaning not only includes the actual father of a person, but also the mother, grandparents, and the entire family line. All of these people have contributed to the iniquity and sin that has been passed on to the children.
Down the Family Blood-Line
When the sins of fathers and resulting curses down a family line are alcohol, drugs, or sexual abuse, the problem is easily identified. But the root cause and how to be delivered from it, remains a mystery.
Less obvious sins, as the source of the problem, are not usually not even identified as generational. People simply explain the behavior, “Oh, he’s just like his father, and you know what he was like!” God’s justice results in the children being affected by the pressure of inherited iniquity (perversion) as well as the pressure of possible “curses” because of their father’s (and mother’s) sins,
The pain of past hurts rules and ruins many lives.
Definition of Soul/Spirit Hurts – They are on the “inside” of a person. They are wounds to the soul or the spirit man that are carried and experienced within the person himself. They are physical and cannot be seen.Their presence is revealed by their symptoms, by the manifested evidence of unhealed emotions, behaviors and thoughts.
Soul/Spirit Hurts surface when a person appears from the past or present, or a situation occurs that is similar to the person or situation involved with the original hurt. These types of hurts simmer, stifle, and sometimes shut a person completely down. Understanding scriptures bring comfort and hope, but it does not necessarily bring healing. Forgiveness, for example, releases from bitterness and from the bondage of negative ties to others, but it does not necessarily heal hurts. Demonic deliverance brings great freedom, but it does not heal hurts. God heals hurts.
He (God) is waiting to touch our deepest pain if we let Him. His healing is a type of divine exchange, in which we offer Him our hurt and He offers us His healing.
How Sins of Fathers and resulting Curses are Related to Demonic Oppression
Sins of the father and resulting curses work hand in hand with demons to create an ugly cycle. The initial sin gives an opening through which demons can oppress. Then, once established, the demons work to continue down the family line, where they exert pressure on the descendants to sin in the same way as their father. The sin provides licence for the demons to continue their oppression, causing the cycle to continue generation after generation.
Exodus 20:5 (the last phrase) is translated this way: “He punishes the children and their children for the sins of the father to the third and forth generation.”
